During the childhood years, things such as genetics, environment, dental habits, and trauma can make it more difficult for the jaw and teeth to grow properly. A common result of one or more of these factors is the development of an underbite.

An underbite is a type of malocclusion or “bad bite”. It is when the teeth on the lower jaw come up and over the teeth on the upper jaw when you put your teeth together. Mild underbites are when the two rows of teeth almost align properly, whereas a severe underbite is when the two arches do not come together at all. In either case, an underbite can create an unintentional expression that can cause you to feel self-conscious about your smile.

Underbites are typically caused by an irregularity in the lower jaw, often present since birth. Regardless of the cause, underbites can pose several problems, including difficulty eating and speaking properly, frequent jaw pain or headaches, excessive tooth wear, and more.

If you or a loved one has developed an underbite, there is no need to feel embarrassed about it. There are a variety of treatments available to correct underbites and make it appear as if you never had one. Treatments can range from the use of orthodontic appliances, such as a jaw expander and headgear, to orthognathic (jaw) surgery. Depending on the severity of your condition, Dr. Youssef Saad can provide a treatment plan that best fits your needs.
