Do you have an orthodontic retainer? If so, you need to take good care of it so it can help you maintain your straight and healthy smile. One beneficial way of taking care of your retainer is by cleaning it regularly. To help you do so, our orthodontist, Dr. Youssef Saad, has some tips and tricks for you.
When you take your retainer out of your mouth, you need to clean it immediately. This is important because the plaque that lies on your appliance could harden, which would make the substance extremely difficult to remove. All you need to do is rinse the retainer under water and then let it soak in denture or retainer cleaner. You should do this at least once a day if you can’t do it every time you remove the retainer from your mouth. This will not only clean your retainer, but it will also help it smell and taste better.
If you notice plaque building up on your retainer, you should remove it with a soft-bristled toothbrush and mild dish soap or water. Do not use toothpaste because toothpaste has abrasives that can scratch the retainer.
