Participating in sports can be very beneficial for your body and even your mind. However, sometimes it can be dangerous for your smile if you’re not careful. This is why our dentist, Dr. Youssef Saad, encourages you to care for your teeth and gums when you run, jump, kick, spike, throw, and score. If you participate in fall sports, like football, volleyball, and soccer, our dental team recommends doing a couple things to keep your smile in tip-top shape.

First, wear a mouthguard. Mouthguards are the strong appliances you can find at the local sporting goods stores and your dental office. Your options include stock mouthguards, boil-and-bite mouthguards, and custom mouthguards. If you wear the guard when you participate in high-contact sports, your smile will be protected from hard objects that hit it, which can help you prevent chipped, broken, and knocked-out teeth.

Second, avoid drinking sports beverages. Although these drinks seem beneficial, they’re not for your smile. In fact, these drinks are loaded with sugar, which means when you drink them, the sugar attacks your teeth and promotes the development of cavities. So, it’s best to drink water rather than sports drinks.
